It’s just not right…

Tea.jpeg

Todays picture has something going on that makes me want to say, “Oh that’s not right!” …who dunks digestive biscuits in a china cup? Get a mug and stop it! …next you’ll be licking your spoon.

Sometime things we like, don’t fall into place and we cringe inside. We have habits and traditions, preferences and norms. …especially when it comes to afternoon tea in England. Don’t mess with tradition! I have a friend that uses a spoon in the marmalade even when he is at home alone!

We EVEN get defensive when someone points out how silly a tradition might be. Putting milk into the cup first does indeed help preserve the china from stains but is it really important?

There are things that are important, and things that are not but so often the two get mixed up. It really isn’t important in the grand scheme of things whether we put milk into tea or tea into milk. OK so the cup gets stained but, really? If that’s the thing that makes or breaks my day then I’m very likely to be focusing on things that are selfish rather than people around that are actually important both now and for eternity.

The idea that my preferences become more important that being a good neibour to people I meet, or protecting “my” property at the expense of relationship seems - well, silly - when you step back and imagine eternity.

Hebrews 10:34 makes a whole lot more sense once that “step back” has been taken.

Dunk away, put the tea in first and if you want to put the cup on the table without a coaster - be my guest!

Is the “Loving People” part of what Jesus had to say so much harder just because of which order tea and milk are mixed? Really?
