Do you know what it’s like?

Some of the places I’ve had the privilege to visit have been really fun. I mean, who wouldn’t want to plough a field behind a buffalo? That’s something you can always bring up at parties and use as one of those “believe it or not” facts. Yes, I’ve done some really fun things in some of the most amazing places on earth!
But what if I lived there? What if that were my job? Would I be so happy if I had to get up every day and plough this way all day to make barely enough money to live?
After this particular buffalo had helped me out by walking back and forth in the field leaving me little more to do than keep my hand on the rope and try to keep the plough upright, she went to her stall and slept. I went to my hotel and also slept!
The farmer who’s field I had borrowed to try my hand at ploughing, had a far simpler home to go to but I’m sure he slept too! His room had no plumbing or even running water, no heating or ventilation, no electricity. His home was located almost an hour’s walk away! He could go there after feeding his “tractor” and putting her in her stall.
Do I know what it’s like to work in the fields, ploughing behind a buffalo?

I’ve done it, once, but no, I have no idea what it must be like to wake up knowing I have to go back and do that all over again tomorrow. I have no idea what it’s like knowing that if I don’t go and plough a field today, there won’t be food on the table tonight!
I’ve been privileged to see, to do, to try something out. I understand that I have it so easy in comparison to many I’ve met. However, despite knowing what it’s like to hold the plough, to stand in the rut within reach of the kick of a buffalo, to be tired after the hard work and in need of a shower, no, I have no idea what it’s like!
