Your Move
Although I understand the game of chess and can enjoy both playing and (believe it or not) watching others play, I can’t claim to be an expert of the game in any way. The intricacies are immense and endless variations can play out especially between skilled opponents. When I see a master player at work it fascinates me how they can see so many moves ahead and predict outcomes seemingly easily. The key to the game is to be able to anticipate your opponent’s options several moves ahead and prepare and position your own pieces to best advantage your army. This is far easier said than done! Clearly, to do this, you have to be able to see the whole board and to be able to plan, undistracted. Today’s picture shows a game in its very early stages. However even an expert player would be unable to predict the outcome or even possible next moves. The reason is simple, not enough of the board is visible. While just about a half of the pieces in play ARE visible, and it is clear a game is being played and that it is chess, little more can be determined. The picture of course is certainly not taken from an optimal viewpoint for either player. Jeremiah 29:11 has God saying, “I know the plans I have for you…” God knows the moves that will win the game because He can see the whole game. He has the greatest viewpoint. But the chapter doesn't stop there. While we could sit back and say, “well, God has it, so I guess that's that then!” verse 12 goes on to say, “…when you pray I will listen.” And verse 13 “If you look for Me wholeheartedly, you will find me.” In the chess game of life, we so often can’t see even the next move, let alone what the end outcome of a situation will be. God not only “has it”, He actively encourages us to seek Him and talk to Him. The implication, far from just being in control, is that God wants us to participate, to be actively involved and to learn from the Master.
