Clinker built flowerpot

Pretty as the flowers are, as a former seafarer there’s something just not right about using such a well built boat as a flower pot! I’m sure I must have seen hundreds of things with flowers growing out of them from boots to teapots, from an old sink, to now this boat. I’d even go as far as saying some of the secondary uses I’ve seen items used for possibly exceed the original intent in a very positive way.

What’s the most unusual repurposing you’ve seen?

One place that repurposing isn’t so smart is with us as people. We were created to worship God, but somehow we’ve come up with just about every other possible option instead. The boat in the picture has something interesting hiding under the paint. Its what is called “clinker’ built. These wooden boats have overlapping planks that rely on staying wet to work. The wet wood swells up closing the gaps between the boards making a watertight seal. Once boats like this dry out it usually takes a lot of effort to make them usable again. One perhaps strange method of re-swelling the clinker was to intentionally sink the boat and wait for the wood to swell, then tip it up and it would re-float. I wonder if watering the flowers would actually fix the boat? Paint of course on such a boat was a fatal mistake since it would prevent the wood from getting wet and swelling. I wonder if that’s what killed this one?

The spiritual parallel is there too isn’t it? Immerse yourself in the life giving word of God or dry out and sink! Getting back to the place where we can honestly say, “I was created for THIS” involves knowing what we were created for in the first place. The chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Being fulfilled does not mean filling our lives up with dirt, slapping on something to make us look good and sitting idly by as life passes.
